It varies between 3,000 and 10,000 miles. If you use a conventional motor oil, it's probably best to have it changed between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. If you use synthetic motor oil, you can wait until 7,000 to 10,000 miles. If you're not sure, simply check your vehicle's owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendation.

Being 1 qt down usually won't harm anything. For most of the cars I've had in my life, 1 qt is the difference between the "low" indicator on a dipstick and the "full" line. For computerized oil level checks, same thing. Read your owners manual and find out how to change the oil or add oil as necessary.

Maybe more, maybe less. Normally, you'll notice the light come on when taking a sharp corner as the oil sloshes to the side and the oil pump sucks air for a second. When you do the math, a quart low on oil translates to a 33 percent increase in contaminant concentration. Plus, the remaining oil spends less time at rest in the oil pan and more time in the hot frictional zones of the engines. The added heat, shear and pressure will more rapidly degrade the oil and its additives.

On the dipstick there is 3 dots. It was at the lowest dot. The "low oil" sensor never popped up. So I assume it was never Too low.. Replacing the oil, and bringing the oil level back up, is part of regular vehicle maintenance. But if you neglect to change the oil in your car, or the oil level drops due to a leak in your engine, you will begin to experience the symptoms of a car low on oil.

The oil still looks brand new but is a half quart low. Safe to say just top it off? People have said it's due to my lead foot burning a little more oil and a smaller percentage have said to take it into the dealer and say it's eating oil.
